Chapter 1-6 The Great Gatsby Character Analysis :)

There are many characters in the book The Great Gatsby. They are from a range of normal to strange. Throughout the book, you get to meet new characters that become stranger than the ones you met before. Characterizing every character is hard because you are not given to many details about some of the characters you meet. However, I love this book because each character is unique and not all of them are the same which makes the book fun to read. Although my character analysis looks short on some of the characters I tried my best to Analyze them to my best ability. So now let's get Analyzing!

Nick Carraway-
He is the narrator of the book. He is cousins with Daisy Buchanan. He is from Minnesota and went to Yale and fought in WW1. He is honest, doesn’t judge people or at least tries to. People tend to tell him their secrets, for example, Daisy told nick about what she said about her daughter the day she was born. He moved to west egg which serves as a what someone might call the place for the new rich people or a copy of the past. He becomes good friends with Jay Gatsby his neighbor. He likes Jordan Baker and describes her perfectly. He likes Jordan because she is sophisticated and because she is full of life. However, he doesn’t like that she lies and that she doesn’t care for people. He moved to New York to join in the bond business. The book The Great Gatsby is described through nick’s eyes or perspective. He also tries to rekindle the love between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan.

Daisy Buchanan-
She is a beautiful young lady. Fitzgerald describes her as pure by the color of her dress that she was wearing in chapter 1. He also said that the room was lively and had a great calming vibe to it when she was around. She is from Louisville and she is a woman who did not grow up in the 1920s and did not have as many freedoms as Jordan has. She is Tom Buchanan’s wife and she does not believe in divorce. She is very charmful and charms people by the way she speaks. She whispers and gets up close to the person she is speaking to. However, she is shallow because she will destroy things and then she will go back to her money afterward. She had a love affair with Jay Gatsby before she met Tom. She loves money but his not quite loyal. She is Nick Carraway’s cousin.

Tom Buchanan-
He physically has big muscles. As nick described it, Tom has a “cruel body” and has “enormous power.” By him having big muscles it makes him aggressive and dangerous to people physically and mentally. He harms daisy his wife mentally and physically by hurting her finger in chapter 1 and harms Myrtle physically by breaking her nose in chapter 2. Tom is racist and sexist and repeats these things out of books he has read. He only thinks one way and doesn’t accept anything else that is not his way of thinking. He cheats on Daisy with Myrtle. He and daisy live in East egg which is known for the old money. He uses violence to get his way and to maintain control over his life. When Tom learns about Daisy and Jay’s affair he becomes jealous. He believes he can cheat but daisy can not cheat at all. Even though Tom is my favorite character he needs to go to an anger management class or meeting to deal with his anger issues. Nick describes him as a vibe killer because when he closes the windows in chapter 1 he says that the lovely vibe that happened when he came into the room with Daisy and Jordan ended when he closed the windows.

Jordan Baker-
Nick describes her as mysterious and fascinating. She is a famous golfer but Nick doesn’t realize that until later on in the book. She is famous because of her sport but her being famous is built on lies and deceit. She cheated in her first golf tournament and lies to everyone. Nick likes her. The reason why she lies is to protect herself from the cruelty of society. Nick in chapter one describes her as distant but beautiful and sits kind of like a statue or a manikin when she sits on the divan, which is a chair. Jordan kind of represents the opposite of daisy in away. Jordan represents the woman in the 1920s and Daisy represents the woman before the 1920s. She and Nick go on one date.

Myrtle Wilson- She is the opposite of Daisy. She wears black or dark colors which are not pure. She changes her outfits 3 times throughout the chapter she is in. She wants to be noticed in her life but she lives in the valley of ashes which is a place for poor people. She wants more in life and Tom can give that to her and her husband Goerge Wilson cant give that to her. She is Toms’s mistress. She is stuck up and is somewhat of a gold digger. She feels trapped in her marriage because she can get a divorce because she is catholic. She lives in a dirty old garage where Goerge works as a car dealer and a mechanic. Tom uses him to see Myrtle. She is very curvy in away. She is thiccc with 3 c’s. She is ugly but pretty at the same time which I don’t understand how that is possible. She has an apartment in Manhatten which is packed with furniture that is too big for it. She has a bad taste in art and in fashion. She is the opposite of Daisy because she buys stuff out of knock-off shops while Daisy would buy stuff out of high-end stores. However, I do feel for her because she is stuck in a figurative prison and somewhat of a real one later on in the book.

Jay Gatsby- Gatsby is around 30 years old. He is Nick’s wealthy neighbor who throws extravagant parties. He is in love with Daisy and tries to get her back. He fought in WW1 with Nick. His childhood was based in a rural part of North Dakota. He became wealthy from selling alcohol and selling stolen goods. When he was a child he hated being poor and wished to be wealthy. he dropped out of St. Olaf’s College after only two weeks because he could not bear the janitorial job with which he was paying his tuition. He is in love with daisy and fell in love with her when he was an officer in the war when he was in Louisville. He lied to Daisy about being wealthy. He lives in West egg and his house faces towards Tom and Daisy’s house which at the very end of chapter 1 you can see him reaching towards their house which I believe is a symbol for him longing for Daisy’s love. He is very secretive about his past which makes rumors circle around through people because nobody knows the true history of Gatsby but he soon tells Nick his past. His real name is Jay Gatz but he changes his name to Jay Gatsby as a representation of him changing himself. Gatsby is the opposite of Tom. Tom is a cold-hearted, bully towards people while Gatsby is loyal and good-hearted towards people.

Goerge Wilson- He is Myrtle’s husband. He is described as lifeless and hopeless. He is the owner of a sad little car dealership/mechanic in the valley of ashes. Goerge loves myrtle and becomes devastated when he hears about the affair between Myrtle and Tom. I believe Gatsby and Goerge are somewhat the same because they both are consumed by their dreams and become crushed by the women they love. Nick describes him as a ghost because he is so pale. When Tom comes into his shop he becomes filled with hope because Tom and him have a deal about a car that Tom is not going to give him. He is somewhat gullible.

Owl eyes- He is astonished by how Gatsby’s books in his library are real. Nick finds him in Gatsby’s library in chapter 3 while looking for gatsby the host of the party. He is very drunk and crashes a car at the end of chapter 3. He is very strange in my opinion.

Meyer Wolfsheim- Helped Gatsby sell alcohol illegally. Since Gatsby is still in contact with Meyer it makes it seem like Gatsby is still selling alcohol illegally. Gatsby and Meyer are acquaintances.

Out of all these characters my favorite has to be Owl eyes because he is just so strange and awkward. He is just so adorable in a way. But Tom Buchanan has to be my second favorite because it is never a dull moment with Tom because he either is just plain mean or hits someone out of plan anger. I know my character Analyses are very short and not very informational I tried my best to analyze them to the best of my abilities.
