Paper 2: Democrat Response + Trump's State of the Union Address

There were two speeches that were produced and given this week. One was a very important speech that was given by our President Trump. Trump's speech was very important because the speech that he gave was the State of the Union Address that every president gives at the beginning of every year they are in office. The other speech that was given this week was a Democratic response of the State of the Union Address that was given by Michigans governer, Gretchen Witmer.

But, we all know about the State of the Union Address that President Trump gave at the beginning of this week. Trump talked about what he wanted to accomplish by the beginning of 2021. Trump's State of the Union Address was very effective at relaying his message and was filled with equal parts of logos, ethos and emotive language. Trump's audience is families and American citizens. Now Trump is for the American citizens and for the American dream is clearly pictured in his speech. For example, Trump repeats the word "Always" in a part of his speech which ties into his choice of diction and also into his tone and relaying his message. Trump does this to prove and to have emphasis on his message that he is for the American people and they can trust him. He is trying to relay his message of what his image of America is and how he is going to accomplish it. Trump also wants to make the citizens of America trust him and confident in his dream of America. Trump accomplishes this by his choice of diction. For example, Trump stated "But like so many that came before me, I keep my promises. we did our job." in his State of the Union Address speech. Trump said this in his speech because it makes the reader and or listener confident in him because he keeps his promises, not like the presidents before him. He chooses to phrase this sentence like this because it makes the audience he is aiming for see him in a brighter light than any other president. It also builds on his tone. Trump's tone in this speech is confident. Trump stating that he is better, wiser, and more trusting than every president that came before him builds on his tone throughout his speech.  Trump relays his message very well and his speech is very effective in accomplishing that.

Moreover, Michigans Governor Gretchen Whitmer gave a democratic response on Trump's State of the Union Address. Her speech was not as effective as Trump's speech. Even though she does have logos, ethos, and emotive language in her speech, they are not used equally. Whitmer's target audience is families at home and the older more mature people of our generation. Whitmer's tone at the beginning of her speech is grateful, inspirational and lighthearted. Whitmer goes on in the beginning of her speech about her daughters and how Michiganders are no different than Americans. Her choice of diction in this speech builds her tone. If her target audience is families then her tone fits. But, her choice of diction is not formal. Her speech reads as if she wrote it an hour before she gave it. Diction is important to the structure of any type of writing. If your diction does not fit with the topic of your writing then your whole speech or what you wrote won’t grab or persuade your target audience. Whitmer does not really persuade her listeners and readers to follow her and believe every word she says. Another reason why Whitmer’s speech was not effective in relaying her message is because there were not equal parts of ethos, logos, and pathos. Whitmer's speech is filled with emotive language that appeals to pathos. For example, Whitmer talks about her own experience with the healthcare system. Whitmer goes into great detail about her experience with dealing with her health care providers declining her mom’s chemo treatments. This makes her audience sorry for her and makes them have empathy for her. This does help her speech because this one example applies to ethos and pathos, but this is not the only example of pathos she gives. Whitmer's speech is filled with pathos and a little bit of logos which makes her speech not effective.

Both speeches are different. Both speeches were written by two different people, so their tones and choices of diction will be different. And both speeches were written for different occasions and both of them had different meanings. However, Trump's speech was more effective at relaying his message then Whitmer's speech.
