An American Dream. This is something every person in the world wants or has. Whether it is money or a picket white fence in their life, it is something people all over the world dream of. Now my American dream is to be successful in life. I have always a child wanted to help people and to be known for helping people around the world. Now characters in books can have American Dreams as well. For example, we will be looking at the American Dreams of the characters in the book The Great Gatsby.
First, we are going to take a look at Gatsby's American Dream. Gatsby's American Dream is to have a life with the woman he loves the most, which is Daisy. At the end of chapter 1, Nick describes Gatsby as reaching across the water towards Daisy and Tom's house with a green light. That green light I believe is kind of a symbol of Gatsby's American Dream to be with Daisy. The color green to me symbolizes money so when Gatsby reaches out with that green light it makes me think he longs to be with daisy but to also long for her lifestyle as well.
Second, we are going to take a look at Daisy's American dream. Daisy's American Dream is to be wealthy even though she already is. However, I do believe she also wants to be with the man she loves the most which are I believe to be Jay Gatsby. She wanted to marry Gatsby long ago but never did because he was not rich or wealthy at the time. However, she still won't be with Gatsby even though he is rich he still can not sustain her upper-class lifestyle.
Thirdly, we are going to be looking at Goerge Wilsons American Dream. Goerge's American Dream is to be successful in his career as a car dealer/mechanic but he also wants to be loved by a woman even though he is not rich. He lives and works in the Valley of Ashes which symbolizes to me were people who are poor live and where the poor American dream goes to die. He longs to be loved by his wife or have that great love that does not care if he is rich or broke. His wife Myrtle does care if her husband Goerge is poor because she is having an affair with Tom Buchanan. The person that gave Goerge hope for his business to become successful.
Fourthly, we are going to look at Myrtle Wilson's American Dream. Myrtle's American Dream is to be rich and also to be apart of the upper-class. The way she is trying to achieve her dream is by having an affair with Tom Buchanan Daisy's husband. She is having this affair with him because he is rich and is apart of that east egg upper-class lifestyle she has always longed for in her life. The way she achieves having Tom is by her physical appearance which is very curvey and very thiccc. but she also does this by social behavior. She acts like an upper-class member by not accepting compliments and changing her outfit 3 times a day and buy big luxury furniture in her small apartment.
Next, we are going to look at Jordan Bakers American Dream. Jordan's American Dream is to be successful in her career as a professional golfer. In the book, she cheats in her first every golf tournament to become successful in her later career. This shows you she does not care how she wins as long as she wins she is fine. This also shows you she will do anything to become successful in her life. She also lies to people to get her way and the things she wants or desires to have in her life. She is not really successful in her life or her sport to be proven as true success.
Finally, we are going to look at Nick Carraway's American Dream. Nick's dream is to strive for something in his life. However, I do not believe Nick wants the American Dream because he has witnessed so many people's American dreams die right in front of him. For example, he has witnessed Goerge Wilson's American dream die in front of him. Goerge lives in the valley of ashes which is where poor people live. In the 2nd chapter of the Great Gatsby he meets Goerge and sees here he lives and how bad hi business and life is going for him. Another person Nick has witnessed the American Dream not going so good for them is Gatsby's. The reason I say Gatsby is because he longs for Daisy Buchanan's love and affection but she does not give it to Gatsby even though she wants to.
All of these characters American Dreams are very different. The reason for this is because they all want something different such as one wants money and another wants love from a woman. However, they are similar in the way they will do anything to achieve their American Dream whether it is cheating in a tournament or cheating on her husband to become rich and popular. From my American Dream, I can most relate to Goerge Wilson. The reason I say this is because Goerge and I want to become successful from the place of rock bottom that we are at now. We long for our life or business to become successful.
